Not sure where we all are with this thing but I found these two things recently online. The first hints at one approach to the library. A model to consider to base MTA on (alluded to by Mr Keller with the Tower of Babylon drawings)

The second is a critique of the museum itself. See it here.

Both of these things make me question the concept of the Museum as we know it for the future.

I briefed Mr Kim on the premise and impetus of the IMTA project. After some conversation i began to question him on his vision for this project.

Q "In your vision, where on earth is The IMTA be located, anything is possible and the location is entirely up to you. This is your vision."

New Idea!

I am so excited to announce that I've developed a design that I am so very proud of (no images at this time but will post them tomorrow) for the museum!! So I have this theory about what inspires me..........ready for this?? EVERYTHING!!! Everything around us that's tangible, audible, visual, even edible; what's out there that you can't somehow relate to artistically??

Some of my biggest inspirations as far as visual stimulations are movies. Movies can have some of the greatest artistry plausible for an idea to develope. For instance, the way in which I created the entrance into the museum, resembles that of the female sphinx-like statues shown as the gateway of courage and truth in "The Never Ending Story". If you haven't seen the movie, I suggest you go to Blockbuster right away and rent it; it's brilliant.

My differences, though, were the design of these statues in general. Obviously no one likes a copy cat plus how can I possibly be happy with something of mine that's not really mine? That's why they call it inspiration. The exceptional concept is there but with my own originality. I'm sure I'm not the first to draw inspiration from this movie or movies such as this but that's ok because that is what I feel builds and individual artist - or at least one of the pieces anyway.

As far as my design for the museum itself, I went with something not to out of this world, but not too simple. I wanted something huge and yet individually compact in a way. This idea, as well, was inpired by another movie of interest. "The Labyrinth" is one of my favorite movies of all time! The description in itself is facinating: a maze of paths bordered by high hedges, as in a park or garden, for the amusement of those who search for a way out.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I want to confuse everyone and have them turning around in never ending circles, but each intricate divider wall will have pieces of art work for everyone to admire and muse over. The entire building would be see through panneling/glass, including the floors. There will be an earth bound chamber in the ground (underneith the museum), spanning the entire surface area of the museum itself. This chamber will hold the most expensive pieces of art work in the museum, which will also be glass/see through.

So, though the concept may sound dizzying, it's really just an intricate maze of masterpieces to appreciate and negotiate for. There will also be 4 see through studios in all four corners of the museum that artists from around the world will be invited to come and work on they're own pieces displayed for an audience sharing personal thoughts, techniques, even their own inspirations so people can truly feel what the artist may feel or experiance while in their creative process.

Some simple concepts that I've considered are bathrooms and exits those will be labled and displayed in the descriptive sketches that I plan on posting tomorrow. I would want this entire concept to be located on a sizable plot of land, preferably with a surrounding forest, which opens up a door for an entire world of locative possibilities! Spain, Italy, Iceland, China, Austrailia!

For me, there's no limitations on where, why, or how because one of the most recent choice phrases I've been taught to acknowledge, from a very good friend, is "Make it Happen". On that note, please read, enjoy, and comment on anything and everything I've said. One of the other things I feel I grow as an artist from are critisizms, your words.

Museum Possibilities

When I think of a museum anymore, I think of blah, blah, BLAH!!! This is that moment when I can really enjoy going into a "museum" and be so overwhelmed with excitement I might just die!!! I think of this in terms of the most simplest of idea that comes to mind and that is, "What would make me happy?" A one of a kind art museum of course!!!

How could you possibly sit still knowing that you are about to embark on a new journey not just for your eyes but for your mind, spirit, and soul. This is music for your eyes to listen to all the beautiful differences the world has to offer. How much wonder there is to find and present in millions and millions of different ways to enrich one's heart. Just the possibility that you could be changing a persons life with your own personal expression; changing a persons state of mind even if it's just in that moment of onlooking, is more than anyone could hope for.

The ability to inspire people is a huge part of what art means to me and it needs to start at the front door of what holds these inspirations. A museum created by you should some how reflect you in it to some degree I believe. These sketches are rough but they are a start to what could truly be an artistic phenomenon. Children of Men is a movie all artist should see. It is a rather common end of civilization movie with all the standard end of the world horrors but in the film something unexpected happens... Art is given a very special place.

Is it possible for a massive structure to be portable? I had a stimulating conversation with a good friend about a portable museum, although brief, I was still taken back by the possibility. At first I dismissed the idea as momentary madness from a mentor, but upon further investigation I realized that this is indeed possible and maybe advantageous. What do you all think? Riffing off the post from Josh and my response to it why not follow the thread of utilizing the corporate model of architecture? I reference architect Kent Suhrbier from the prototype for this show, the MOPA exhibition Immediate Thought. His sketched proposed reclaiming empty store fronts throughout a city and using them as areas to show work. Why not take it global? Wal-Mart opens huge buildings globally as it shuts down it's own older stores leaving huge gaps of urban waste. Ideally, if this show allows us to imagine a future utopia, something needs to happen to these empty buildings. I propose that after the fall of this corporate beast, the art world re-purposes it's architectural shell. Thus instead of creating one Monolithic-All encompassing structure, we reuse a global network of buildings. Art then can be as accessible as your local Wal-Mart. Perhaps naive or simplistic but something to discuss nonetheless.

Tyrell Corp Building

The Movie: Blade Runner ( ridley Scott 1982 ) Has one of the greatest exemplars of pure Corporate power in the structure that is known as the Tyrell Corp Building. This Massive structure, over 800 stories high dominates a fictitious LA industrial landscape. I have recommend Blade Runner before but i again stress the investigation of the wonderful designs(Syd Mead and Scott) especially for anyone who hasn't seen this well thought out spectacle.

Oh and i recommend the unrevised edition. For some reason the unCG edition of the movie looks better? The models seem more substantial.

Museum Typology III: Signature Museum Building

The Guggenheim Museum in New York is amongst the earliest museum buildings that use the building design to establish/reinforce a reputation. These buildings match designer ego's with those of the institution. More often than not they apply a formal wrapper to the White Box gallery approach. Serving equally as icons as arks it is difficult to discern if this type of building enhances or impedes the work for which it is intended to contain. As every city snags their own capital A buildings from rock star architects like Gehry, Lebiskin, Koolhaas... do they lose their importance. How different is the Guggenheim Las Vegas than the Hard Rock Las Vegas. How different are these than Subway restaurants or Gap clothing stores.

Are epic films but more importantly they are filled with some of the finest designs of their epoch. The Great Syd Mead is the mastermind behind most of the works and his designs have inspired me since i first encountered the brilliant works. I highly recommend seeing the classic and relevant works as soon as possible especially if you haven't seen them.

Wayne Barlowe's classic INFERNO, is a wonderful fantasy epic depicting hell, and all it's minions. The book contains some wonderful forms and some nontraditional buildings..its something to look at if you can get your hands on it.

Marios's inspirational images continually return to monolithic building. Which has propmted me to dig through my stacks to find the catalog from a show at The Heinze Architectural Center @ The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The show was all the way back in 1996. Many of the building proposals presented in the exhibition have now becoem realities.

While I don't think the building examples are all that relevant to The IMTA project, the essays at teh front of the catalog discuss the nature of monolithic structure and warrant some review in relationship to this discussion. I have posted the essay by Detlef Mertins titled Open Countours and Other Autonomies. (click on title)

It is intereting that he also returns to Michael Fried's writting about minimalism.

Museum Typology Model II: White Cubes

Emerging as Modernism transitioned into minimalism the white cube of International Style architecture became the preferred building vessel for the containment of art in the 20th century. As art work shifted away from a historical representations and narratives to more conceptual and philosophical operational grounds a neutral was deemed important.

The white cube is an abstraction of a building. It is vague rendering of space which allows the contents and viewer to project themselves upon the space. Michael Fried made some assertions regarding shifting role of the viewer in his 1967 Artforum essay Art and Objecthood*. It is interesting that he work he chose to use to exemplify his argument was Tony Smith's sculptural cube, Die.

Fried was against this new relationship which required the engagement and participation viewer. He preferred the more transmissive, now nearly extinct, arrangement in which the art delivered a message and the viewer received the message without any regard or thought of them self.

I wonder though if the artist have given over too much control in how work is viewed. Can in be shifted from place to place, wall to wall, city to city, culture to culture, and time to time and still maintain it's same intent and integrity? Is the white cube too amorphous of space allowing too little control of the viewer's experience and allowing to much of the viewers personal history to simultaneously come into consideration? Or does the white cube operate as an index triggering the clearing of the viewers mind in preparation for the intake of something new?

One understands the pressing concerns of governments will be to feed and police their huge populations, so what will become of public art venues? Will our leaders keep supporting the arts? What about the general population attitude towards the arts in turbulent times? One wonders if the arts will fall upon a similar fate shown in Children of Men (Alfonso Cuaron ). How will the Arts be presented in times ahead? What will happen to the thousands of art museums that dot the world?How will art be presented to possibly traumatized masses? Will art be safe? What is the future of the Art Museum?

There are two ionic visions of museum that are readily conjured. The first is marble Beaux-Arts tomb for art.

Étienne-Louis Boullée and Claude Nicolas Ledoux were product of a Beaux -Arts education, but rather than dwell in the ornate and decorative formal aspects they turned their attention and efforts towards more visionary and utopian ideas.

Both are warrant looking at in relationship to the IMTA, as does their predecessor Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

Why a museum, why a building?

I think it is only appropriate at the impetus of this project to question/discuss why a museum is the appropriate vessel for the centralization, storage and display of art. As an artist I am continually questioning if my medium is appropriate to my message/motivation. Does a museum building, the institutional structure actually aid or impede on the way in which works of art operate?

The Premise

The International Museum of Terran Arts would house over 4 million works of art, the collection would include works of art from all the epochs and all the practices under one collection. This would be the Smithsonian of the Arts. Everything from ancient Assyrian Sculpture to Jeff Koons would be represented in the largest public art collection on earth.The building , or building complex would be massive with over 2 square miles of gallery space. What I ask from all is to create sketches( that range form very raw pencil an dink drawings to completely finished polished works) for this Arch of the Arts. This project would consist of over two years of collaboration between me and over 50 individuals. I would invite participates from across the spectrum of arts , not just artists would be invited but, curators, critics, writers, composers and untrained laymen to contribute their unique visions of the possibilities of the museum exterior. The final curated show would be displayed in a massive Museum of Pocket Arts Show sometime in 2010 or 2011 ( see www.mopaonline.com ). But The possibilities are endless. A gallery may show the works( my gallerist, Bruno David is a fan of Mopa ) anything is possible. This collaboration would require some of you to work outside your esthetic, but i would allow you to collaborate with another peer if you wish or if you do not have the necessary skills to realize your vision to your satisfaction. The Premise for the museum is rather open ended. The placement, location, size and number of buildings is up to the vision of the Idea maker. I would prefer to have a river in the sketches for scale purposes and perhaps a highway that leads into the structure, or complex. I would require that the building(s) is 50% powered by renewable energy and is built by 20% post consumer materials, this should somehow be visible in your drawings. I would also prefer something that stands out from any other building ever made. I know that's vague but hell , I want to challenge you all and myself.
